[REVIEW] THE DONUTTERY, HUNTINGTON BEACH

BACKGROUND AND MOTIVATION:

MY BROTHER AND I HAVE BEEN TRAINING AT THE GYM WHILE FOLLOWING A PALEO DIET PLAN. HOWEVER, WE ARE BOTH LEAVING THIS THURSDAY — HIM, TO BOSTON, AND I, TO THE PHILIPPINES. WITH OUR GYM MEMBERSHIPS ON HOLD AND THE CLOCK RUNNING DOWN TO GRAB SOME FINE LOCAL DOUGHNUTS BEFORE BEING SUBJECTED TO THE UBIQUITY OF DUNKIN DONUTS WE HEADED OUT TO A SPOT NEW TO US, THE DONUTTERY IN HUNTINGTON.

WE FINALLY ARRIVED AT THE SPOT AFTER AN UNFORESEEN SOUTHBOUND I-405 DETOUR. THE PLACE WAS EMPTY AND THERE WAS NO WAIT — A REFRESHING CHANGE OF PACE FROM THE M&M DONUT CROWD.

I HAD MY FIVE PANEL ON, I WAS ABOUT TO ‘COP’ DOUGHNUTS, AND I LOOKED PREGGERS. THIS IS SUPERFUTURE.

THE DONUTTERY’S CASHIER WAS A KIND OLD VIETNAMESE LADY. WE TOLD HER OUR ORDER AND SHE GENEROUSLY THREW IN AN EXTRA DONUT TO MAKE IT AN ‘EVEN’ BAKER’S DOZEN. WE ORDERED SOME OF THE MORE EXPENSIVE SPECIALTY DONUTS — I WAS EXPECTING TO PAY ABOUT $15, BUT WE WERE CHARGED THE NORMAL PRICE FOR THE DOZEN, DESPITE HAVING AN EXTRA DONUT AND HALF OF THE ORDER BEING SPECIAL DONUTS.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

CLOCKWISE, FROM TOP LEFT: PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY, STRAWBERRY NUTELLA, APPLE CRISP CINNAMON SUGAR, RED VELVET CREAM CHEESE, STRAWBERRY GLAZED, BLUEBERRY GLAZED. THE OVERALL VARIETY AT THE DONUTTERY FOR DOUGHNUTS ALONE IS GREAT, BETTER THAN M&MS, AND EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE WHEN CONSIDERING THEIR MEAL OPTIONS TOO.

THE DONUTS WERE PHOTOGRAPHED, DISSECTED INTO QUARTERS OR EIGHTHS, ASSESSED FOR THEIR AROMA, THEN EATEN AND EVALUATED FOR TASTE, TEXTURE, AND ORIGINALITY UNTIL A CONCLUSION COULD BE REACHED / AD NAUSEUM.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:

THE FIRST DONUT TASTED WAS THE PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY DONUT. IT FEATURES CHOPPED PEANUTS ON A PEANUT BUTTER ‘GLAZE,’ ATOP A RAISED DONUT FILLED WITH STRAWBERRY FILLING. IT TASTES LIKE A PEASANT CRUNCHY PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY SANDWICH. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND UNLESS YOU LIKE THE TASTE OF POVERTY AND STRUGGLE. THE STRAWBERRY AND NUTELLA DONUT WAS NOT EVEN TASTED BECAUSE ITS COMPOSITION WAS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME AS THE PB&J.

NEXT, BLUEBERRY DONUTS WERE TASTED TO COMPARE TO PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS W/ OTHER BAKERIES. THE FLAVOR IS STILL ARTIFICIALLY BLUEBERRY. THE TEXTURE IS NOT AS GOOD AS A FRESHLY FRIED M&M BLOOB, BUT STILL MOIST FOR A CAKE DONUT, AND SLIGHTLY CHEWY. THE GLAZE IS SWEET BUT NOT OVERWHELMING, BUT LACKS THE ‘HOT JIZZ MANSNACK’ QUALITIES THAT M&M DOES SO WELL. THE DONUTTERY’S EFFORTS RESULTED IN A NEVERTHELESS TASTY DOUGHNUT.

A VARIATION ON THE GLAZED CAKE DONUT WAS THE STRAWBERRY DONUT. LIKE THE BLUEBERRY, IT TASTES ARTIFICIAL AND MORE LIKE A FRUIT-FLAVOR THAN ACTUAL FRUIT. IT TASTES LIKE THE FILLING OF A STRAWBERRY POPTART, BUT IT HAD THE CONSISTENCY OF DDUKBOKKI. IT WAS VERY DOUGHY AND THICK, BRIGHT RED AND VERY FAKE TASTING — NOT PLEASANT.

THE APPLE CRISP CINNAMON SUGAR WAS WAS EXTRA DONUT IN THE BAKER’S DOZEN. IT WAS SURPRISINGLY FRESH. IT WAS WARM, CRUNCHY ON THE OUTSIDE, DOUGHY AND LIGHT ON THE INSIDE SIMILAR TO A M&M BLOOB. THE ICING AND CINNAMON SUGAR TOPPING, HOWEVER, IS A BIT OVERWHELMING, AND TO MY DISAPPOINTMENT I WAS NOT ABLE TO FIND THE APPLE FLAVOR. THE CRISP IS DEFINITELY THERE THOUGH, AND THE TEXTURE AND FRESHNESS PUSHED THIS DONUT TO THE VERY TOP. 

CONCLUSION:

A ★★★★ MEAL, CONSIDERING:

  • THERE WAS NO WAIT
  • CUSTOMER SERVICE IS GREAT — I GOT AN EXTRA, FRESHLY MADE DONUT TOSSED IN
  • THE PRICE IS GOOD — I GOT 13 DONUTS INCLUDING SPECIALTY DONUTS BUT WAS ONLY CHARGED FOR A NORMAL DOZEN.
  • THE VARIETY IS NICE — THERE ARE PLENTY OF TRADITIONAL AND SPECIALTY DONUTS TO CHOOSE FROM, AND IF YOU WANT SOMETHING SAVORY, THEY HAVE AN ASSORTMENT OF BAGELS/SANDWICHES AND OTHER BREAKFAST ITEMS.

THE DONUTTERY IS A DECENT DONUT SPOT BUT LIKELY NOT WORTH ENDURING A 405 DETOUR FOR. LUCKILY THEY ARE OPEN 24 HOURS, SO PLAN YOUR TRIP ACCORDINGLY. I WOULD NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN THOUGH, BECAUSE AT THE MOMENT THE THOUGHT OF A DOUGHNUT IS TREMENDOUSLY NAUSEATING.

APPENDIX:

HAD AN OPEN FACED LOX/CAPER/RED ONION/TOMATO/CREAM CHEESE BAGEL SANDWICH. IT WAS PRETTY GOOD UNTIL I REALIZED I HAD FISH AND CAPERS FERMENTING ON TOP OF VARIOUS DONUTS IN MY STOMACH.

[08.19.12] Partially Paleo Eats

Had iced coffee and water from Starbucks for breakfast (not actually breaking fast), then had a paleo-friendly adobong baboy with cauliflower singangag and fried eggs. Made a smoothie out of avocado, coconut, pecans, cinnamon and vanilla whey… and that was the end of my 2 week Warrior Paleo Keto stint.

My brother wanted donuts that are available only here in California so we drove down to M&M’s donuts in Anaheim. I ate 3 blueberry donuts and a plain cake donut.

Not even going to ‘reflect’ on this cheat, my only regret is that I didn’t get my bloodwork done beforehand to see how it’s affected by paleo/keto/IF. Oh well.. But I will say the best case scenario of this is that I “shock” my leptin levels and start losing more weight, replenish glycogen stores, and see gains in the gym lol.

Also not going to bother posting my MFP nutrition stats, but I did log it all.

[07.22.12] Korny Azn Gurl Food Pix~

Over this past week, I was the leanest I had ever been, weighing at one point just under 123 pounds. I was fairly strict with what I ate and very disciplined with an intermittent fast/feed of 20/4 hours. I focused on improving myself at the gym and even did more research and reading about health and fitness in my spare time.

However, it got to the point that I felt like I was taking things a little “too seriously,” to the point that I would just stay up late needlessly hating on 15 year old vegan fitspo tumblrs like some insane orthorexic loser blogger. I was getting alarmed by my borderline OCD tendency to compulsively document what I ate and to make sure I ate well, but for what? At this point it felt like it wasn’t for me, personally, but because by documenting what I’m doing, there are “eyes” on me and somehow, I feel accountable to stay “clean.”

It was all getting a little out of hand so yesterday I disregarded my feeding window, and I ate dinner undocumented (for the curious, it was pork and salad). I thought I could use another cheat to stay sane, but for reasons opposite of what you might think — because I was getting obsessed with eating paleo. Strange, right? I would imagine people cave and cheat because they crave and miss junk foods, but for me, I wanted to be able to enjoy food for the taste and transient pleasure instead of for instagram followers and science and all that. I’m insane, I know…

So I had my brother bring home blueberry donuts from M&M’s Donuts in Anaheim, CA. I told him about these many weeks ago, telling him if I were to choose to cheat, I would go so far as to make a pilgrimage there late at night and wait in line for a dozen. These IMO are worth the ‘cheat,’ unlike those macarons I had in a previous ‘cheat meal’ reflection post. I must’ve had 4 donuts total in the past day or so. I suffered the consequences, fought with my stomach and lost, etc, but now that’s over with.

I had one real paleo meal today, which was fried cauliflower rice with broccoli, green onions, bacon, sausage, onion and eggs, with a side of fried plantains:

I’m planning on going back to a strict regimen that I’d been following starting tomorrow (well, now actually, since my fasting period started already). I’m going to resume 5x5 lifts at the gym, a 20/4 IF, cut out coffee, or at least, sleep better. I’m considering making whey shakes just for more protein but that seems like a less primal approach and I’m not too keen on it just yet. I don’t think my goals are as squatz- and gainz- oriented as other lifters.. i’d rather look like an emaciated triad for some reason.

I’m going to give myself 6 weeks of this and see what happens, by then, I’ll be on vacation in the Philippines. I’m gonna refrain from shaving as well :{
